China accounts for more than 20% of the new cancer patients in the world every year

On November 1, Academician Hao Xishan, President of the 22nd Asia-Pacific Anti-Cancer Conference, revealed that the World Health Organization (WHO) 2008 global cancer deaths statistics showed that the new cases of cancer in the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 45% of the new cases of cancer in the world, and the death toll accounted for about half of the global cancer deaths. China's population accounts for 1/5 of the world's total population, and the number of new cancer patients each year also accounts for more than 20% of the global increase.
Lung cancer, stomach cancer and liver cancer are the three cancers with high incidence in Asian countries, and lung cancer is the most important cancer faced by Asian countries. According to the Outline of China's Cancer Prevention and Control Plan from 2004 to 2010, lung cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer, esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer and nasopharyngeal cancer are listed as key cancers to be prevented and treated. These 8 kinds of cancer deaths account for more than 80% of the total cancer deaths in China.
Experts said that bad living habits, population growth and aging are the leading factors leading to the increase of cancer. Common cancer risk factors are increasing in developing countries, such as smoking, dietary structure, obesity and lack of physical exercise. In Asian countries represented by China, rural urbanization, aging population and urban modernization have all led to an increase in cancer incidence rate and mortality. The lack of cancer virus vaccine caused by the pressure of economic reality has also become one of the reasons for the high incidence of cancer in Asian countries.
With regard to the current cancer prevention and treatment in China, Academician Hao Xishan pointed out that the cancer prevention and treatment work is the task of the whole society. While doctors actively treat patients in hospitals, they should also pay attention to the science popularization work of tumor-related knowledge, that is, how to make the cancer diagnosis and treatment work universal in the whole society and let the people treat the cancer prevention and treatment work correctly and scientifically.
